Electric Vehicles & Emerging Tech

The hard part of EV marketing is not awareness

Australians know electric vehicles exist. What stops them is range anxiety, charging access, resale uncertainty, upfront price and a genuinely confusing amount of contradictory information. Every one of those is a marketing problem with a real answer.

The market

Our deepest specialism, and the reason the agency exists.

Who we work with

  • EV and hybrid vehicle brands and distributors
  • New-entrant marques establishing in Australia
  • Charging network and hardware providers
  • Energy retailers and home-energy providers
  • EV-focused fleet and novated lease providers
  • Battery, servicing and EV aftermarket specialists

EVOmedia was built around the electric and emerging-vehicle transition, and it remains the area where we go deepest. That specialism is not a channel skill — it is a category understanding: knowing which objections are legitimate, which are outdated, and how to address either without sounding evangelical.

The Australian context is its own problem. Charging infrastructure is uneven outside the capitals, distances are long, towing and regional driving matter more than in comparable markets, and incentives have shifted repeatedly. Marketing written for a European or Californian buyer does not survive contact with a buyer in regional Australia, and audiences can tell when it has been imported wholesale.

We also treat sceptics as a legitimate and valuable audience rather than an obstacle. The pragmatist who wants running costs, resale figures and a straight answer on charging is closer to purchase than the enthusiast who already decided two years ago — and is far less well served by most of the category’s advertising.

What gets in the way

The problems that actually cost money here

Not a list of generic marketing complaints. These are the specific failure points we see repeatedly in this market.

  1. Range and charging anxiety

Rarely solved by quoting a WLTP figure. It is solved with real-world context: this vehicle, this route, this charging setup, this cost. Concrete beats optimistic every time.

  2. A confusing, contested information environment

Buyers are working through contradictory claims about batteries, resale, emissions and running costs. Being the clearest, most honest source is a competitive position — including where the honest answer is unflattering.

  3. New marques with no established trust

A significant share of EV entrants are unfamiliar to Australian buyers. Establishing credibility on parts, service, warranty and longevity is usually more urgent than establishing the product story.

  4. Total cost of ownership is the real argument

Upfront price comparisons lose. Running cost, servicing, fuel offset, FBT treatment and novated structures are where the case is actually made — and they require content, not slogans.

  5. Shifting policy and incentives

Incentives, standards and FBT arrangements have moved repeatedly. Campaign messaging needs to be built so that a policy change is an update, not a reshoot.

The objection map

Every objection in this category has a specific content answer. Reassurance is not one of them.

  • 01 Range anxiety Named-route content: this vehicle, this drive, this stop
  • 02 Charging access Home charging maths — install cost, tariff, apartment case
  • 03 Resale uncertainty Published retained-value data, updated as volume builds
  • 04 Upfront price Total cost of ownership calculator, not a hero saving
  • 05 Contradictory information Honest comparisons, including the unflattering ones

How we help

What we actually do about it

01

Objection-led messaging frameworks

Every material objection mapped to a specific, evidenced response — and a plan for where each is addressed.

02

Segmented strategy across enthusiasts, pragmatists and sceptics

Three genuinely different briefs, not one campaign with three colourways.

03

Total cost of ownership content

Calculators, comparisons and running-cost content that does the arithmetic buyers are trying to do themselves.

04

Trust-building for new marques

Service network, warranty, parts availability and longevity communicated as headline product attributes.

05

Ride and drive programmes

The single most effective objection-resolver in the category — planned, staffed and measured properly.

06

Charging and energy marketing

Work across the charging and home-energy side, including the vehicle-plus-energy proposition.

Questions

Straight answers

Do you only work on EV?

No. It is our deepest specialism, not our only one. We work across internal combustion, hybrid, aftermarket and motorcycles — and that ICE experience is precisely what makes the EV work credible rather than evangelical.

How do you handle EV scepticism without being defensive?

By conceding what is true. Charging outside the capitals is genuinely uneven; some use cases are not ready. A brand that acknowledges the honest limits earns the right to be believed on everything else.

Do you work with charging and energy businesses as well as vehicle brands?

Yes. The buying decision increasingly spans vehicle, home charging and energy plan, and the businesses in each part of that chain have overlapping audiences.
